The Australia Zoo is outside of Brisbane and run by the Irwin Family of Crocodile Hunter fame. I went right before I left Australia when I was out there in 2006 for my Study Abroad adventure. I have 2 main regrets from that trip.
1. Crappy Camera
This was a decade (yikes) ago before I had a fancy DSLR, before I had a smart phone with a jazzy camera, and even before I had a straight-up plain-Jane point and shoot digital camera. Folks, I had a disposable camera. Can you believe that? Needless to say, my pics were pretty crap. I have hardly any documentation of my time there chilling with the ‘Roos. But that’s ok, because I still had the experience. That sucks, but that’s an easy fix this day and age

2. Animal Encounters ~ Notably Australia Zoo Tiger Walk!
My sweet Aussie friend took me here as a birthday/end of my trip experience. I found out when we got there, that I could WALK A TIGER?!?!? I was very new to travel at the time, and I’ve always been bummed that I wasn’t Princess Jasmine with a cool pet tiger named Rajah. Why not me? But here was my chance! … Until the bureaucratic jerk at the office said you had to book a day in advance 🙁 And I left Australia the next day 🙁 So make sure you book your Australia Zoo Tiger Walk at least one day in advance so you can be like this happy forward thinking couple.

These lucky jerks must have booked in advance 🙁 I got the picture from the zoo’s website. But did you know that there are a TON of other animals that you can “encounter”? WHY IS THIS NOT BEING ADVERTISED MORE!?!?
Check out all the creatures you can play with here! There are even possums if that’s your thing! Red Pandas are my favorite. I can’t believe I could’ve cuddled one D: Please don’t be me. Book in advance!!!
3. Extra Money
To be fair, it was the tail end of my semester abroad in a country where I wasn’t allowed to work, but I was pretty tapped out. But while at the zoo, they had amazing opportunities to take pictures with animals scattered all around the park! Obviously my disposable camera didn’t quite hack it, but I wish that I had more souvenirs.
4. Drop Bears.
Yeah…. those aren’t at the Australia Zoo. In case you aren’t familiar, here’s an “Artist’s rendering” I found via Wikipedia. They don’t have them on Stock Image sites, go figure. Aussies have been regaling poor foreigners and Yanks forever about Drop Bears. They are a tale as old as time! Have you been told a Drop Bear Story? Comment below!

Sorry about the tiger walk, but do please tell people about what they do to lions and tigers in third world countries like Mexico. That sweet little cuddly lion will be sold to a hunting farm and its fate will be to walk right up to the nice man with a gun to be shot in the face.
Resist the urge to play any part in this sick game.
Only do animal encounters with legitimate zoos.
Some of these “off brand” places really do do horrible stuff to the animals! I just read that TripAdvisor isn’t going to sell tickets to animal encounters anymore. It might be worth looking into/creating a database of ethical places you can still go to interact!
